What is Galentine’s Day? Meaning, Origins and How to Celebrate It
- by Natalie Wood

Galentine’s Day is everywhere now! It’s growing in popularity year, on year. But there are still lots of people asking, what exactly is Galentine’s Day? It’s a day dedicated to celebrating the female friendships in your life! Valentine’s day is for loving couples, but some of the most important relationships are with the women you can’t do without! Galentine’s Day isn’t anti-romance, it’s pro-friendship, so why not get involved this year? Keep reading to find out where it came from, why people love it, and how it’s celebrated today!
What is Galentine’s Day?
Galentine’s day is a day devoted to celebrating female friendships in all their brilliance on the 13th of February every year. It’s open to everyone, singles and couples alike to encourage women to praise and appreciate each other.
Where Did Galentine’s Day Come From?
A beautiful example of pop-culture becoming a wholesome and uplifting part of real-life society; popularised by Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation who planned a party purely to treat her friends to drinks, gifts and toasts to show them how special they were. We’re not saying you have to throw your friends a party… unless you want to! But an excuse to treat yourself never goes amiss!
Why Galentine’s Day has Become So Popular
The demands on women are endless: careers, parenting, cooking, cleaning, shopping, planning, menstruation, menopause, exercising… you name it, we’re supposed to do it (oh yeah, we’re supposed to find time to sleep too)! But nobody can fit 30 hours of stuff into a 24-hour day, so we lean on each other. Women help each other physically, mentally and emotionally in every aspect of life! We can rant to each other, laugh with each other and share absolutely everything about ourselves without fear of judgement.
Friends are the family we choose… we have a day to celebrate Mothers and Fathers, Galentine’s Day celebrates friendships! Traditional Valentine’s Day can feel exclusive to romantic couples and it can make you feel lonely, particularly when you’re young. Galentine’s day is inclusive and values everybody in your life, what a lovely thing!
When is Galentine’s Day?
Galentine’s Day is celebrated on the 13th of February every year, get it in the diary now! It’s often used instead of Valentine’s Day when you’re single, or alongside it if you do both, but it’s for everybody.
How do People Celebrate Galentine’s Day?
Galentine’s Day is a great excuse to practice some self-care in the form of socialising! It doesn’t need to be expensive: Try girls’ night at home with a movie, wine and snacks, a Zoom ‘date’ night with a long-distance bestie, try a pottery class for a giggle! Lots of people now send a little gift or funny card and personal note to let them know you’re thinking of them! If you’re looking for ideas our Galentine’s Collection could help! Or, if you have some spare pennies, go all-out with a fancy brunch or spa day. Quality connection is the priority!
Is Galentine’s Day Just for Women?
It’s primarily aimed at women, but inclusion and bonding are the aim so it’s really open to everyone! If you’re male and Galentine’s Day makes you uncomfortable, call is Ladentine’s Day or Bonding for Blokes or anything you like… the name isn’t nearly as important as happiness and connection.
Galentine’s Day vs Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s is aimed towards romance and traditional relationships, whereas Galentine’s is aimed towards any meaningful relationship focused on humour, support and non-romantic love. The two days aren’t in competition and they aren’t an either / or, their purpose is to make the people you love feel special and appreciated.
